My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding

I found the exploration of the Roma living in the United States interesting in that it shows how this people group truly does lack a definitive home. The immense hatred they face in Europe is widespread and no country really wants to house them. There are some efforts to remedy this situation as countries with high Roma disapproval ratings like the Czech Republic are creating programs to improve education for Roma children. It is not uncommon for there to be migrant people groups that lack true homes. The Kurdish people are a good example of this while they do have a state known as Kurdistan. I found the American show a bit odd, however, in that it portrayed the Roma in America as needing to preserve their culture. I see why they need to preserve their culture but I feel like the lack of knowledge of the Roma in America makes it so that they are not as likely to face discrimination due to their Roma background here. Americans, unlike Europeans, are not really aware of the Roma history and deep-seated hatred. For that reason I felt like the American version of the show cheapened a very real issue for Roma living in Europe.
