On April 22nd I went to the screening of the movie Black Souls (Anime Nere) at the SCA, USC Cinema School. This Italian movie was released into the movie theaters in April 24th, 2015, so it was cool to get a first look. Being considered as a gangster film, I was not very excited to sit through this movie; but at the end I was satisfied. This movie is a bout an Italian family, the Carbone, whom have an illegal business they run. This mafia family consist of three brothers, Luigi Roccoco, and Luciano. Luciano is the only brother who does not want to be involved in the family business and lives in the mountains near Milan with his son Leo who is in his mid 20s. Leo is the opposite of his father and tries to get involved in the family business with his uncles. During one event when Leo gets his hands dirty, he makes another clan very angry and this leads to the death of one of the uncles, Luigi. When Leo loses his uncle, his anger rises even more and he plans a revenge. In the process of getting revenge for the death of Luigi, he gets shot and is killed. Its at this point in the movie when Leo's father gets involved and loses his mind when his son is killed. He never wanted Leo to be involved in the family business in the first place. Luciano loosing his mind, kills the last brother standing, Rococo and other members of their mafia clan. Th movie ends with Luciano holding a gun to his own head and that is when the screen goes black.
This movie really reminded me of the movie Cache. The scene where Luciano kills his own brother is a shocking moment for the audience; makes them question the character's personality. Also at the end, when Luciano is holding a gun to his own head, leaves us thinking if he did kill himself or he went about it in another way. Just like Cache, throughout this movie the audiences feel very uncomfortable and confused because of the intensity action of the movie and the complex characters.
Movie was excellent, I never thought audience was uncomfortable and left confused. I would like to find someone who was confused and let's dialogue.
