It wasn't easy watching this documentary. I had
a feeling that this film wasn’t going to do any justice for the town. If anything it made their situation worse and even more humiliating. The only good thing that came out of this documentary was that their stories were
heard. While that may be great, it’s not going to stop filmmakers from scamming
people because in reality where there is a place to make money, money will be
made no matter how wrong it might be. I mean the world is unfair, clearly. While
I found it interesting that the people of the town were tricked into filming a
documentary and were given little to no pay solely for the films own benefit, I
was not surprised. I think we all knew that something shady had to be going on
in Borat but did't think much of it for our own amusement. It was heartbreaking to
see the people of that town stripped of their dignity especially with the
father who worked so hard and entrusted the towns hope to redeem its identity. Although
we all wanted to see the town get compensated for the global humiliation they encountered
in Borat, we knew that there was little to no chance a small town was going to
win a lawsuit against a corporate giant like 20th Century Fox. Although this documentary set out to
relieve the town of such embarrassment from Borat, I believe the film achieved
the complete opposite. It was terrible to see the men from the town enter into
20th Century and be denied like children on such a serious
matter. The whole filming of the sequence when the lawyer just sat back and
watch them get take the hit was just too real to witness. The films crosscut images between Borat and their town made the humiliation worse. It depicted the
town as if it’s a tourist destination in a negative way. I mean the viewers already
know that the towns from Borat, the film doesn't have to reiterate the similarities.
I feel like the edits further clouded their already misinterpreted identity.
This documentary was a complete failure in achieving fairness. The film ends
with the lawyer never coming back to fulfill his promise helplessly leaving the
town in further misery.
