Black Mirror was my favorite TV show that we watched in class.
Despite its sci-fi and futuristic settings, it was surprising how much I could relate to the characters and their desires. Somehow, the characters’ everyday lives of riding bicycles and forced exposure to various contents resembled our current society. We also live in a routine-based society, and many seek to escape their everyday lives by doing something extraordinary. But only some are fortunate enough to make their dreams come true whether it may be due to class, heritage, or economic power. In this episode, many try to change their life by going on a talent show.
The episode was warning us about the dangers that media and technology may bring, which was quite ironical coming from a form a media. The episode showed how people’s request for more and more provocative materials could bring more viewers but transform media as a form of profit rather than a medium to show the “reality.” But since this episode shows this idea through using provocative images itself, it was questionable how much of this episode’s message is “real” and how much is to get viewership.
But I really enjoyed the complexity and duality of this problem; I think it is something that we should think about while watching any contents.
